Description

Fisher 37 - 1976

The Fisher range of yachts are unmistakable, these double-enders with their bold sheer and deep teak clad bulwarks, clearly show the influence of the sturdy fishing vessels of the North Sea.
Fishers are renowned for their solid construction and generally good looks. Many have completed long voyages but they are perhaps at their best in the more northerly waters of the UK, where they provide a level of weather protection and comfort that is second to none, but still manage to maintain a very respectable sailing performance

'Arctic Rose' was built by the original builders of the Fisher range; Fairways Marine
Construction Ltd. She is a factory-built example and is No. 41 of the class. She is of the more indulgent two cabin version, without an aft cabin and consequently without a longitudinal galley compromising the main saloon.

'Arctic Rose' has a dedicated, snug and seaman-like galley to port side, aft within the saloon and seating to either side of the centre-line. The settee berth to starboard side has been shortened to accommodate a diesel-fired, bulkhead-mounted stove, while the original V-berthed forward cabin has been modified to offer an off-set double berth to port and additional storage to starboard.

The current owner has owned 'Arctic Rose' for seven and a half years. Initially, in his ownership she continued to be based in the Solent (as she had been for many years previously), but gradually her base moved west, until moored here in Plymouth.
In recent years, family pressures have dictated that this yacht has seen less and less use and now it is time to sell.

Fantastic as a comfortable, '2+2' cruising home, the Fisher 37's reputation as a go
anywhere, seakindly motorsailer is often cited as the benchmark by which others are judged. Superbly safe for kids and with modern accoutrements such as the bow thruster and modern instruments 'Arctic Rose' would be as suitable for 'weekend outings' as for UK circumnavigations and explorations.

Accommodation

The Forward Cabin's traditional 'V'-berth has been converted to provide an offset double berth to the port side, thereby freeing up the generous cabin volume to the starboard side for a deep stowage cave, with fiddled shelf over.
The original hand basin, with hand-pumped cold water was retained inboard of a
commodious and deep hanging locker outboard to port with a shelved locker beneath. A further hanging locker is fitted to starboard, immediately inside the cabin's door. Light values are good and welcoming, with opening portlights to the sides of the coach roof, replacement deck hatch by Lewmar above and four fixed hull ports capturing those dancing light reflections from the surrounding water's surface.
Sensibly, in modifying the berth, the original access to the under-berth closed lockers was retained and the deeply-fiddled hull side shelves incorporate closed lockers too. In short; there is a lot of storage.
A bespoke, 'Airflow' mattress by the Natural Mat Company is fitted for the double berth and shaped bedding to suit is included.

The Main Saloon's upholstery (both the foam and fabric) has been replaced in the current ownership. A deep U-shaped dinette to port may be converted to provide another double berth if required. The starboard side's settee/berth has been nicely sculpted and was shortened to accommodate a diesel-fired traditional looking 'Taylors' stove that is mounted on the forward bulkhead; a very efficient means of maintaining a warm and dry welcome to the accommodation. Good light levels are ensured by large, sliding windows to either side of the coach roof.
Abaft the starboard settee, a deep hanging locker was fitted immediately
ahead of the heads' compartment and may be considered useful for oilskins, although there is further provision within the heads' compartment too.
A CD player with stereo speakers is fitted outboard of the table. A TV antenna, with 'Glomex' attenuator is fitted.

The Galley is located to the port aft end of the main saloon, divided from the dinette by a half-height bulkhead that imparts a good sense of security to the cook at sea, while not impeding any interaction with others in the saloon itself.
A 'Corian-style', moulded sink and drainer unit has been fitted within a large work surface, with a commodious crockery and locker unit (it could almost be considered to be a bulkhead-hung 'dresser') fitted above.
A top-access locker is provided within the angle between this work surface and the cooker's aperture, but this is not intended as a cool box: a front-opening 'fridge is fitted beneath the sink's drainer. A new 'Nelson' Spinflow two burner gas cooker with oven & grill was fitted in 2015 and the removable work surface over has a dedicated stowage space alongside the steps down from the wheelhouse.
There is provision for a microwave (not included) outboard of the work surface, with another deep under-deck locker alongside.

A Heads' Compartment, located to starboard and immediately at the foot of the steps down from the wheelhouse the heads offers good headroom, light and ventilation, with what would have been provision for 'Oilies' to be stowed in a locker beyond the WC. The bottom of this space has been utilised by the fitting a [74 litre capacity] rigid holding tank, but plenty of space above remains available. A stainless steel hand basin is fitted with individual hot and cold water taps, whilst an independent mixer tap for the shower is fitted to the aft bulkhead.

Wheelhouse: unsurprisingly, a steering wheel is fitted here - to port of the companionwaydown to the rest of the accommodation, but as importantly, comfortable and generously sized L-shaped seating occupies the starboard side and aft bulkhead around a pedestal-mounted (removable) table for far reaching views from within the protection afforded by the wheelhouse.
The helm is provided with a side seat and abaft this, a chart table is fitted
above a 'pilot' berth. This latter berth, being fitted at the same height as the wheelhouse's sole, naturally this berth would not be the first choice for occasional visitors, consequently this valuable space has been used in this ownership primarily for storage of bulky items such as the life raft, inflatable dinghy and other bulky items.
